Course Description:
This course is appropriate for laity and church leadership considering vocations in missions, or for anyone seeking a biblical, historical and cultural analysis of the impact of the world Christian movement. Specific attention will be given to strategy and the imperative of bringing the Gospel to groups that have yet to initially receive it.

  • Winter, Ralph D., and Steven C. Hawthorne, Perspectives on the World Christian Movement: A Reader, 3rd Edition (WCL289-1)
  • Hawthorne, Steven C., Perspectives on the World Christian Movement: A Study Guide, 1999 Edition (WCL290-50)
  • Both are available from Gabriel Publishing House

    Course Requirements:

  • Complete all readings and quizzes
  • Complete mid-term and final exam
  • Complete the integrative project which includes a paper
  • PURPOSE:
    To provide a biblical, historical, and cultural context of the world Christian movement in order to facilitate sound personal and ministry decisions.

    OBJECTIVES:
    The Perspectives course is an introductory mission study course that:

  • Explains the biblical rationale and imperative for world evangelization.
  • Traces the expansion of the Christian movement across the world from the time of Christ to the present, and the task yet to be accomplished.
  • Identifies the unique problems and skills involved in communicating the gospel cross-culturally.
  • Explores new avenues and opportunities for obedience for God's imperative for involvement in world missions at home and abroad.
  • Provides the minimum necessary understanding for effective participation in the complex tasks of world evangelization and international development.
  • Identifies the basic components necessary for strategic and intelligent planning in the missionary task of the Church.
  • Provides a foundation for further study and a framework for significant life-decisions.
  • Personal Responses:
    A personal response page follows weeks 5, 8, 9, 11, and 14. These will not be graded, but are designed to help you integrate, apply and discuss what you are learning and any questions you may have. All students should complete the personal responses, which are due the week following the lecture for the above lessons.

    Quizzes:
    Quizzes are the weekly homework for each lesson and are open book; you many use your texts to complete them. They are located in the back of the Study Guide. Quizzes are due the week following the lecture for that lesson. (Electronic copies of Personal Responses and Quizzes can be found online at www.perspectives.org/students/resources.)

    Integrative Project:
    The Integrative Project is designed to help the student integrate and apply principles from the lessons. Students may work in teams of 2-3 people, with each team submitting one paper. Discussion about the project will take place at the end of Lesson 3. The number of pages required is 10-12, with an additional 2-3 pages per additional person.
